We all know that you can’t choose your weather on race day and with the last two weekends being full of rainy weather I thought it would be helpful to contribute some spring rain running tips. Let’s start with the head and work downwards:
Gear:
Brimmed hat- to protect your eyes and face from the wind and rain. Bonus points for one in a bright color.
Waterproof jacket- find a packable, light shell that is breathable. Look for one with high visibility strips on it for safety on the roads.
Shirt- long or short sleeves but definitely one that is moisture wicking. Waterpoof jackets tend to trap body heat which is good until you start to feel like you’re in the sauna. Avoid cotton as it gets heavy and cold.
Shorts/pants- lightweight, quick drying fabric is the key here. The feeling of wet, heavy running tights that trap the moisture on your legs is not a great feeling.
Socks- avoid cotton and choose the synthetic with minimal seams. Consider pre-taping your feet if you tend to get blisters.
Shoes- Goretex or similar running shoes will keep your feet dry. While it’s tempting to run in an old pair of sneakers look at the tread first. Rain will make the roads slippery and mud can be fun on the trails but you will still want some grip on the soles.
Other tips:
- Safety first: rethink your run if you see lightning, hear thunder and feel heavy winds.
- Change into dry clothes and socks right away after your run.
- Stay hydrated- while you might not feel as thirsty running in the rain as you do on a full sun day you still need to take liquids in.
- Before the run use your favorite anti-chafing product on any spot where your wet clothing will rub against your skin.
- After the run stuff your shoes with newspaper to help them dry. Avoid the dryer if possible.
- If you run with a phone, put it in a plastic baggie before putting it in your pocket.
- For my long haired friends, try a braid or a bubble ponytail to prevent tangles.
- Bring your mental toughness to the run- trick your brain into thinking you’re warm and dry and the run will be more fun.
